SMALL INCOME WORKSHOP
Work experiments

A small digital product needs a maintenance budget after the first sale

A downloadable product can be delivered automatically while still requiring corrections, compatibility updates and customer support. Estimate that work before calling the activity passive. Use a modest scenario tied to an actual product idea, with no assumption that a finished file guarantees sales or eliminates ongoing responsibility.

List the likely maintenance triggers

Identify what could change the usefulness of the product: software behavior, a broken source link, an unclear instruction or an error in the content. A static printable has different needs from a template tied to a changing application. Keep the scope specific. Do not promise lifetime updates casually when you have not defined the work or time horizon. SBA cost planning provides a useful frame for treating ongoing work as a real part of the activity.

Separate support from new custom work

Describe the questions included with the product and the boundaries of any extra service. A buyer needing a file-opening clarification presents a different task from asking for a completely customized edition. Keep the published terms clear and fair, using appropriate professional guidance where necessary. Do not hide known defects behind a strict support boundary. The operational aim is to understand what maintaining the actual offer requires, not to make every customer question disappear by definition.

Build a labeled time scenario

Use fictional or observed inputs and say which. Estimate a small number of relevant support events and a plausible amount of work for each, then add review and correction time. Do not turn the scenario into a guaranteed support rate or a sales forecast. Actual customers may need different help. If the workload becomes unpredictable, a smaller product, clearer instructions or a different service model may fit better than expanding an unsupported promise.

Review the product before another sales push

Check that current instructions and files still match what is offered. Keep corrections and edition identity understandable so buyers know which version they have. Retain private purchase information securely and avoid requiring unnecessary personal data for ordinary support. A digital product can be useful and manageable, but its economics should include the work needed to keep it useful. Continued selling is a decision to review, not an automatic reward for finishing the first file.

Illustrative worked example

Illustrative arithmetic: a fictional template sells ten copies during a trial period. Three customers each need ten minutes of ordinary file help, and a correction takes another half hour. That is one hour of support and maintenance beyond creation and selling time. The scenario is not a prediction; it demonstrates why automatic file delivery and zero ongoing work are different claims.

Questions that come up

Does automatic delivery make income passive?

It automates one stage. Creation, support, updates and promotion can still require work, and demand remains uncertain.

Should I promise updates forever?

Only make commitments you understand and can support. A defined scope and period are clearer than an unlimited promise whose workload is unknown.
